January 5-8, 2009
Led by William Ganis, Assistant Professor of Art
In 1825 the opening of the Erie Canal unlocked the American west and made the Finger Lakes of New York the economic backbone of the U.S. During this Winter Institute program, you will explore
the art, artifacts and architecture that are the legacies of that prosperous industrial age; learning
through experience with visits to historic sites, museums and encounters with arts professionals.
The richness of New York ’s cultural legacy might surprise you – you’ll visit the lavish
Tiffany-designed Willard Chapel (the only complete Tiffany chapel in existence), the world-class, comprehensive
collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, unique exhibits at museums in Auburn, Syracuse and Ithaca even some unique collections right in Aurora (click here for a detailed schedule). Through
his experience visiting and working with these institutions, Wells art history
professor
William Ganis
will help you understand
your encounters within the larger contexts of art
and U.S.
history.
