LIFELONG LEARNING ADVENTURES FROM WELLS COLLEGE AND THE AURORA INN

In the quiet stillness of winter, return to the village by the lake to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit

The faculty and staff of Wells College, in partnership with the staff at the Aurora Inn, invite you to join us in January 2009 for the first annual Winter Institute - a series of week-long learning adventures. Modeled after the "group educational travel adventures" offered by Elderhostel, Winter Institute programs combine the thought-provoking lecture and discussion format of the classroom with exciting regional excursions to museums, historic sites and other points of interest.

After spending the day on the beautiful Wells College campus or at one of our local partner sites, relax in luxury at the Aurora Inn, our host for all meals and accommodations.

EXPERIENCE NEW YORK'S CULTURAL LEGACY
January 2009 (specific date to be determined)
Led by Assistant Professor of Art History William Ganis

Assistant professor of Art History William Ganis will lead an experiential program that will focus
on Central New York's cultural history. Once the economic backbone of the US, the Erie Canal
and Finger Lakes region is full with art, artifacts, architecture and other legacies from a prosperous industrial age.

Explore the art collections and
architecture of Wells College, Louis Comfort Tiffany's Willard
Memorial Chapel, Cornell University's Johnson Museum, the Corning Museum of Glass and the
George Eastman House. Through lecture and discussion, Dr. Ganis will contextualize these
exhibitions, artifacts and places; participants will then travel to and tour these cultural sites in an
integrated learning experience.

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF LAKES AND LAKE DISTRICTS
January 2009 (specific date to be determined)
Led by Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies Tom Vawter

Aurora-on-Cayuga, as it is sometimes known, lies in the heart of one of the world's most beautiful
lake districts - the Finger Lakes of New York State. The beauty and physical power of lakes has
inspired artists and scientists throughout history, now, our understanding of these properties is
crucial to managing the world's most precious natural resource: fresh water.

Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies Tom Vawter will use Cayuga and the Finger
Lakes as a case study for understanding the natural history of lakes: where they occur, how
they are formed, what lives in them and how these living things interact with their watery
environment. Through the case study process and visits to the Cayuga Lake Watershed and
Onondaga Lake (the nation's most polluted), we'll cover approaches currently being applied with
the goal of protecting and restoring the environmental quality of the area.

RELIGION AND POWER - AN EXAMINATION OF RELIGION'S INFLUENCE ON SPACE, COMMUNITY AND POLITICS
January 2009 (specific date to be determined)
Led by Assistant Professor of Religion Sarah Malena

In the United States today, we observe a separation between religion and many aspects of our
lives, especially in society and politics. However, religion broadly informs many of our daily
actions and decisions, outside of any church, mosque or temple. In fact, even the separation that
exists in a secularized world has been influenced by religion.

Assistant Professor of Religion Sarah Malena will lead you on an exploration of religion in
various aspects of life, examining the origins and history of religion in the context of history,
archaeology, and anthropology to determine how we currently understand our living spaces,
landscapes, membership in communities and positions of power. Classroom discussions
will be enhanced by visits to local sacred spaces and Seneca Falls, home to the Women's
Rights Movement.
